The Djinn Game

In days gone by I was insane,
Not from a flaw inside my brain,
But workings of a spirit within;
A seemingly friendly, malevolent djinn.

All manner of things it urged me to try,
With no thought of whether I'd live or die,
Just grab at the brass ring when it passed by.

The djinn had plans deep within its soul,
To lead me along the route down to Sheol.
Willingly, foolishly, I journeyed along,
Joyfully, stupidly, singing his song.

Take a chance and be a winner,
It don't matter you a sinner.
What we gonna have for dinner?

Back then I took a lot of chances,
Seeking love from new romances;
Hoping to destroy the dragon,
Burning in me, drank a flagon.

I went this way year after year,
Ignoring that which I should fear,
And when it came, the price was dear.

The djinn said, Hey. It not your fault.
You blindsided by unfair assault.
Them other ones, they done you wrong.

So I went on singing his song.

Inside I writhed, wracked by pain.
With all my strength I bore the strain,
And hobbled on wearing my chain.

Then came a day djinn met his match,
When eyes of love reached out to snatch,
Me from its hold; loosened its grip,
To take a new and different trip.

The djinn held on for years to come,
Struggling to keep me under thumb,
Hoping that I'd end in a slum,

A wasted shell of what might have been,
Had I not lost my love in my sin.
Then in me came a Spirit to dwell,
More powerful than those from hell.

This Spirit led me toward the light,
Denied the djinn his great delight,
Of owning me by day and night.

He, with His power set me free.
When being nailed unto a tree,
His Father issued this decree,
All who believe belong to me.

The djinn still tries to cause me fright,
Threatening my heart he'll bite,
If I'll not yield; therefore I fight,

With power given from above,
The power granted by His love,
To walk the line set by His hand.
I'll end up in His Promised Land.

"The Gin Game" was a 1981 movie staring only two actors: Hume Cronyn and Jessia Tandy.
Plot Synopsis from www.imdb.com: Set in an old folks home, senior citizen Weller Martin has the disease of Old Age, meets an old woman named Fonsia Dorsey who's diabetic. They both discuss issues such as society, the hospitals, money, families, and the folks home where they live, over a game of Gin Rummy. Fonsia has never played before so Weller teachers her, instantly she goes on a winning streak, making it very hard for Weller not to lose his temper. But he does. Written by Dylan Self.

Fascinating. Produced like a play instead of a movie.
