Omnipotence

Omnipotent ?

In a recent eschatalogically leaning conversation with one of my sons, who is a devout Christian believer, he posed this two pronged question, (paraphrased),

"If God is all powerful, does that mean He could cause Himself to cease to exist ? And if He did that, could He then bring Himself back into existence ?"

The process of trying to grasp the implications inherent in the question reveals the relative impossibility of conceiving of the nature of God. Even the word 'nature' depends on the existence of what we call 'natural' ,,, the very cosmos which is presumably a creation by God.

When he was a youth, this same son raised another question in a humorous vein ...

"If God can do ANYTHING, can He make a hamburger so big He can't eat it all ?"

Similarly, "Can God make a rock so heavy He can't lift it?"

The answer to these questions has to be "Yes".
God CAN do anything, else we would not call God, God. It does not matter that in our world, governed by Aristotelian thinking, it is not possible to do the impossible. As Scripture tells us, "What is impossible for Man is possible with God."
