The map at right shows the historical counties of Scotland above Yorkshire with colors added to the counties most often mentioned in Scottish records for the surname Muir. There were Muirs in other counties as well.

The map below shows the counties in Maryland circa 1789 with the Muir & Hepburn locales of Dorchester (DO) and Prince George's (PG) colored differently. These two counties' boundaries did not change significantly during the period of our Muir ancestry as we know it. Maryland did not exist until 1632 when it was carved out of Virginia as St Mary's colony by King Charles.
