   About Romain Solares

Romain Solares died September 3rd 1878 in New Orleans as a result of the yellow fever epidemic. He was age 18. This places his birth about the year 1860.

Death certificate states he was born in Spain and was living, at his death, with Ramon Solares at 115 Union Street, New Orleans. That is the address where Ramon's family lived at the time of the 1880 US census.

None of the Solares family members appear in the 1870 census of Orleans Parish, Louisiana, yet we know from documents that Ramon and Juana were married at New Orleans in 1870. Ramon is reported to have come to America in 1868 according to census enumerations. His brother Sebastian, born 1862-4, also in Spain, arrived in either 1871 or 1877 depending on which census sheet you examine. It is likely, and logical, that Romain, born 1860 in Spain, was another brother who came to America. Probably with Sebastian in 1877. Ramon reportedly came in 1868 at age 20. In 1868 Romain was only eight years old and Sebastian five years old. They may have come together, at ages 14 and 17, to live with elder brother Ramon until they were of age to be on their own. Unfortunately, Romain did not live to experience the 'American Dream'. This is speculation in the absence of definitive evidence.

There is no discernible trace of the Solares brothers [or Saleras or Soleras, etc] in any of the passenger and immigration lists for 1860 thru 1880. And, no inkling of their presence in New Orleans in 1870. They could have been away during the census. Many, many Spaniards came through Havana and had family ties there. It was also the universal center of cigar making.

Given the age gap between Ramon, Romain, and Sebastian, there probably were other siblings in Spain and we may someday be able to trace the family in Asturias, Spain. For more on this topic please read the analysis on Sebastian's page.
