About Sebastian Solares

Analyzing what we know about Sebastian Solares may give us insights into other Solares relationships. Known records follow this analysis.

Sebastian first appears in the 1880 US Census. He is living in New Orleans with Ramon Solares. He is listed as "Brother". The census gives his birth year as 1862, making him about age 18. His host Ramon has a birth year of 1848 making him sixteen years older than Sebastian. According to the census, both were born in Asturias, Spain.

Ramon immigrated to United States in 1868 [1900 census].
Sebastian immigrated in 1871 [1910 census] or 1877 [1920 census]

Sebastian and Ramon are cigar makers in New Orleans according to an entry in the 1890 City Directory of New Orleans.

Sebastian married Catherine Duncan in Chicago in 1893 or 1895.
[IGI - 3 sources. IGI information is supplied by LDS contributors and has not been verified in Illinois records]. Why he relocated to Chicago has not become known to us.

In 1900 Sebastian is living in Chicago with wife "Kitty" [Catherine], infant daughter Consuela and two lodgers [1900 census].

In 1910, he is still in Chicago making cigars. With him are: wife Catherine, daughter Consuela, son Ramon, and nephew Cesaro Huerta, born in Spain. [1910 census] Huerta has not been researched yet.

In or about 1915 he makes a trip to New Orleans. Photos are taken of Sebastian and Consuela. Son Ramon is not in evidence.

In 1920, he is still in Chicago making cigars. With him are: wife Catherine, daughter Consuela, son Ramon, and nephew Munis (or Munio) Aquilino, born in Spain. [1920 census] Aquilino has not been researched. Huerta has apparently moved on.

Sebastian's father is Jose Ramon Solares. [IGI record]
Ramon's father is R. Solares. [Certified Copy of Marriage Record]
This man is arguably one and the same.

Sebastian's mother is Teresa De La Venta. [IGI record]
Ramon's mother is Theresa Benita. [Certified Copy of Marriage Record] This woman is arguably the same. Sebastian and Ramon Solares are identified as brothers in the US Census enumerations at New Orleans.

Sebastian's two nephews have surnames different from his, indicating they are children of married sisters of Sebastian. We can surmise Sebastian had at least two sisters since there are two surnames, Huerta and Aquilino.

He could have been a full brother to Ramon, making the sisters common to both men, or Sebastian might have been a child of the same father, Ramon Solares and the same mother, Theresa Benita, or his father's second wife, Teresa De La Venta. Given the mess that officials made recording people's names, Venta and Benita could easily have been mixed up. The Benita name is in official records ... the de la Venta name is in user pedigrees.

Between 1920 and 1930, children Consuela and Ramon have grown up and started their own lives. The nephews are somewhere else. Sebastian and "Kitty" (Catherine) have moved to California.

Catherine died in 1933 and Sebastian in 1945, both at Chicago. [IGI record]

Presumably they returned from California, possibly because Catherine was ill. Census records after 1930 are sealed for 72 years so when the 1940 census is available we can see where Sebastian was at the end of his life.

When we get to the point of researching records in Spain we might tie this all together and find out whether Theresa/Teresa is one person, or if Jose Ramon Solares was married twice, both times to a woman named Theresa.

Above map traces Sebastian's journey from birth in Spain 1863 & emigration to New Orleans in 1871 then move to Chicago in 1893, to California in 1929, finally back to Chicago where he died in 1945.

He married Catherine duncan in Chicago and two children were born there. They moved about the metrpolitan area across the decades [see census data below on page].

For their own reasons they moved to the Los Angeles area in 1929 after children were grown. Both Sebastian and Catherine died in Chicago. Either they returned before 1933 together or he laid her remains to rest in Chicago and returned to California. He died in Chicaho in 1945.
