[2] Physician attended Alice at Touro Shakspeare Home from 1939 until death in 1947.
It was a nursing home. Probably the "Old Cerebral Hemorhage" noted by physician incapacitated
Alice in 1939 and she lived out her life there. The Touro Shakspeare NUrsing Home is still operational in 2006.}

ABOUT US
Dating back to 1932, our Gothic-styled building has consistently provided residential care for
indigent, convalescing elderly, chronically ill and disabled Americans, including U. S. Veterans.
The building features a nondenominational chapel with a 20 foot domed ceiling and stained glass
windows, an enclosed courtyard and shaded lawns.
Located on General Meyer Avenue in Algiers, a community west of New Orleans, Louisiana,
Touro Shakspeare is owned by the City of New Orleans and managed by Touro Shakspeare, Inc.
This team of health care professionals, licensed by Louisiana's State Department of Hospitals,
strives to provide a consistent, quality continuum of care in medical services and social
activities for our residents.
The facility, to care for the "indigent homeless,” was the result of a bequest by Judah Touro,
a local merchant and philanthropist in New Orleans. The original three-story building was erected
on Louisa Street to honor his bequest in 1862 and cared for approximately 300 indigent persons.
During the Great Depression, the current facility was erected and due to time and circumstances,
the city of New Orleans accepted the financial responsibility of the home. Based on the
philosophy of social welfare of the times and the needs of the community, the facility
evolved into a home for the elderly and later, an institution for the general nursing care
of women and men and remained so until Hurricane Katrina. We successfully evacuated all of
our patients to safety during Katrina and suffered NO LOSS OF LIFE during the evacuation.
Today, Touro Shakspeare Centre is currently seeking to work with charitable organizations,
non-profits and corporations to preserve and build on the strengths of our facility and its’
heritage to the community. We are working diligently to re-patriate our 120 residents back
home, post-Katrina and to serve as a focal point for elderly and senior adult services in
Greater New Orleans. Our management team is committed and resolved to recruit, coordinate,
amplify and consolidate resources from corporate, non-profit, community and grass roots
organizations, donors and youth to help in our efforts.
