Juana's Origins & Migration
|
Our knowledge of Juana Vinet is severely limited.
She arrived in America before 1870 for certain ... she married Ramon Solares that year.
Her father John [Juan] was in America with her. He witnessed her marriage. There are indistinct
traces of a John Vinet in records but not definitive enough to cite here as proof of anything.
In 1885 New Orleans there was a death recorded for Juan Vinent, age 71, born Mahon, Spain. It
certainly seems to be him. It states he resided in the City of New Orleans the past 35 years.
Four years later in August 1889, Juana Vinent is record as having died at age 39 years and 10 months,
making her birth in October 1849 which is the correct fit with all other records. She was born in
Spain. If her father was in New Orleans for 35 years ending in 1885, he came in 1850 when Juana was
an infant.
Her mother was Margarita Bonas. All were born at Port Mahon, Minorca, Spain. What brought them
to America is unknown. It is uncertain whether Juana's mother came to America with them.
The name Vinet/Vinent is plentiful among French people but scant among those of Spanish descent.
Historically, Minorca has been part of Catalonia which straddles the borders of Spain and
France. Mayhap the ancestors of Juan Vinet came from just across in France or during one of
the many military invasions of the island.
Juana lived only to age 40.

Shown above is an ambrotype, a photograph made on glass as a negative. I have scanned it and
reversed the image to a positive and cleaned it as well as I reasonably could. Ambrotypes were
the rage in America and Great Britain from about 1850 until the mid 1860s when tintype displaced
it in popularity, mainly because the glass was fragile.
The time period is ideal for the little girl in the photo to be Juana Vinet with her father Juan
and brother whose name eludes my research at the moment. The photo was in posession of my grandmother
Marguerite Solares whose mother was Juana Vinet. Neither the man nor the child in the photo bear
the slightest resemblance to any Solares man, woman, or child, and we have photos of all the
Solares family members as far back as 1870.
I never saw the photo before March 2007 when a cousin-in-law showed it to and explained
its origin. I can think of no reason for my grandmother to hold on to a photo of no meaning or
consequence for eighty years. I surmise her father gave it to her as a keepsake after her mother's
death in 1889 when Marguerite was only age four. Her elder sister Magdalena was grown and married.
She had only her father and a gang five of brothers at home. She was the 'baby' from her father's
first marriage. I am personally convinced that the girl in the photo is my grandmother's mother, the
man he mother's father, and the boy her uncle, Perhaps in time supporting evidence will surface.

Balearic Islands, Minorca & Mahon
|
From Wikipedia.org 2007 08 comes these extracts concerning the Balearics, Minorca, and Mahon:
Balearic Islands
In the chaos surrounding the fall of the Roman Empire, the islands were conquered by the
Vandals. They were subsequently reconquered by the Byzantine Empire, but soon fell to the
Moors after the their conquest of Iberia.
Between 1113 and 1115, a Tuscan and Lombard fleet, led by Ugo da Parlascio Ebriaco and
Archbishop Pietro Moriconi of the Republic of Pisa, made a successful expedition against
the Balearic Islands. The expedition was launched with the support of Constantine I of
Logudoro and his base of Porto Torres.
In the 13th century, king James I of Aragon conquered the islands which led to subsequent
founding of the Kingdom of Mallorca, but in 1344 it ceased to exist and it was directly
incorporated into the Crown of Aragon, which was later united dynastically with Castile as
a result of the marriage of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon to become
part of the newborn Spain.
The Balearic Islands were frequently attacked by Barbary pirates from North Africa, the
Formentera was even temporarily left by its population. In 1514, 1515 and 1521 coasts of
the Balearic Islands and the Spanish mainland were raided by Turkish privateer and Ottoman
admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa.
Island of Minorca
The island of Minorca was a British dependency most of the 18th century as a result of the
Treaty of Utrecht, when Spain ceded Gibraltar and Minorca to Great Britain after being
captured during the War of the Spanish Succession. It was finally and permanently ceded
to Spain by the Treaty of Amiens in 1802 during the French Revolutionary Wars.

The Balearic Islands are one of the Catalan-speaking territories designated by the cultural
term of Catalan Countries. Majorca and Minorca are the Balearic Islands proper, while the
other islands are included in the appellation as part of the Autonomous Community of the
Balearic Islands. The main islands of the autonomous community are Majorca (Mallorca in
Spanish), Minorca (Menorca), Ibiza (Eivissa), and Formentera, all of which are popular
tourist destinations. Among the minor islands is Cabrera, which is the location of the
Parc Nacional de l'Arxipèlag de Cabrera. The islands can be further grouped, with Majorca,
Minorca, and Cabrera as the Gymnesian Islands, and Ibiza and Formentera as the Pine Islands.
Minorca (Menorca both in Catalan and Spanish; from Latin Balearis Minor, later Minorica
"minor island") is one of the Balearic Islands (Illes Balears Catalan official name,
Islas Baleares in Spanish) located in the Mediterranean Sea and belongs to Spain. It takes
its name from being smaller than nearby island of Majorca.
Minorca has a population of approximately 88,000. It is located around 39°47' to 40°00'N,
3°52' to 4°24'E. Its highest point, called Monte Toro, is 358 m/1174 ft above sea level. The
island is known for it large collection of megalithic stone monuments: navetes, taules,
and talaiots, which speak of a very early prehistoric human activity.
Mahon
Mahón (alternately, Maó; Catalan it is also the official name, Spanish Mahón), is a
municipality and the capital city of the Balearic Island of Minorca (an autonomic Spanish
community), located in the eastern part of the island. Mahon boasts one of the deepest
natural ports in the world.
The name is attributed to the eponymous Carthaginian general Mago Barca, brother to Hannibal,
who is thought to have taken refuge there in 205 BC.
