Bernard's Story & Marriage
|
Bernard O'Neill and Florabelle Fundaberg both grew up in Newark, Ohio though their families attended
different churches and they went to different schools; he to St Francis de Sales and she to Newark High School.
Newark in 1900 had a population of less than 15,000 persons so people could easily know one another
and know about families and their reputaions. A report in the August 2, 1918 edition of the local
newspaper, the Newark Advocate, there is a story about boys racing bicycles.
Bernard was a winner in his class as was Charles Fundaberg in his age class. Census records show
that Charles was working in Detroit at the same time Bernard was there. One way or another,
Bernard and Florabelle found each other and were married in Detroit in 1936.
They were married in the rectory because Florabelle came from a Lutheran background.
The Roman Catholic church of that day would not allow "mixed marriages" to be celebrated in the
usual manner of a nuptial mass and ceremony.
Newspaper reports from Bernard's life can be accessed from the O'Neill Lineage Page.
