GENEALOGY.COM - Surnames: Stith Family Genealogy Forum Posted by: Karen Cotter (ID *****8605) Date: March 12, 2004 at 20:41:12 I have been reviewing Virginia families (most of them not mine) and have gathered the following on the Stith Family. Descendants of John Stith Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 STITH He married JANE UNKNOWN. Notes for JOHN STITH: Posted By: Russ Rowlett Email: Subject: Jane Stith-1600s, Charles City VA Post Date: June 13, 2003 at 13:08:51 Message URL: http://genforum.genealogy.com/stith/messages/355.html Forum: Stith Family Genealogy Forum Forum URL: http://genforum.genealogy.com/stith/ Identifying the wife of John Stith has been great sport for Virginia genealogists for many years. I want to return to an old idea that her maiden name was Jane Drury. Here's my analysis. Comments welcome. Jane Drury was born in England, probably around 1625. While still in England, she married Thomas Gregory. Sometime in the late 1640s or around 1650, the Gregorys emigrated to Charles City County Virginia, following (or accompanied by) Jane's brother Thomas Drury. Not long after they arrived, Thomas Gregory died, leaving no known children. Jane then married Joseph Parsons, whose wife, thought to have been a daughter of Edward Mosby, had recently died. Jane and Joseph had one daughter, Judith Parsons. Then Joseph died, in 1656. Jane had no money for his funeral, so the county court ordered Thomas Drury and Edward Mosby to split the charges. Edward Mosby was named the guardian of Judith Parsons. Twice widowed now, Jane was still very early in her thirties. She took a third hisband, John Stith. He had money, so Thomas Drury asked for and got a court order transferring his share of the funeral expenses to John Stith. However, Edward Mosby remained the guardian of Judith Parsons until Mosby died in 1663; then Stith took over the guardianship. He also struck a deal with Richard Mosby, who was evidently Edward Mosby's son and heir, providing that Richard Mosby was to pay half of Judith's inheritance in 1665 and the other half in 1666. Meanwhile, John and Jane Stith had two sons and three daughters; they named one of the sons John and the other one Drury. Jane was still alive when John died early in 1694, leaving her widowed for the third and final time. Mosby and Drury have been the two most popular choices for Jane's maiden name. Drury is the obvous choice, because she named a son Drury and that name became traditional for males in the Stith family. No Stith was ever named Mosby. The objection of Mosby partisans has been that Jane cannot be a daughter of Thomas Drury, because there is a 1665 deed of gift in which Thomas Drury gave six slaves to his "dear and onely child" Dorothy. But there is no reason to think Jane was a daughter of Thomas Drury. Thomas Gregory and "Ja. Gregory" are mentioned as headrights in the same 1653 land patent, so we have good reason to think Jane was married for the first time in England. That's where her father was; Thomas is much more likely to have been her brother. Notes for JANE UNKNOWN: Major John Stith married Jane, widow of Joseph Parsons and had issue per Supplement to Tuckahoe and the Tuckahoe Randolphs, Note E, published in Genealogies of Virginia Families from Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. It shows their children as: 1. Drury Stith, who married Susannah Bathurst, a daughter of Launcelot Bathurst of New Kent County, Virginia 2. William Stith who married Mary Randolph, eldest daughter of William Randolph of Turkey Island 3. John Stith of Charles City County, Virgina who was a Burgess 1718-1723 4. Anne Stith, second wife of Colonel Robert Bolling of Kippax; his first wife being Jane Rolfe, granddaughter of Pocahontas. The Stith Family by Armistead C. Gordon published in William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 22, No. 1, transcribed on Rootsweb.com archives by Kathy Merrill shows: Major John Stith, in Virginia before 1656 (21 Quarterly, p. 182) married Jane, widow of Joseph Parsons and had issue: 1. Captain John Stith married Mary Randolph 2. Lieutenant Colonel Drury Stith, died 1741 3. Ann Stith, married 1681, Colonel Robert Bolling (William Stith IS NOT shown. Children of JOHN STITH and JANE UNKNOWN are: 2. i. WILLIAM2 STITH, b. of Charles City County, Virginia. 3. ii. DRURY STITH. iii. JOHN STITH. 4. iv. ANNE STITH. Generation No. 2 2. WILLIAM2 STITH (JOHN1) was born in of Charles City County, Virginia. He married MARY RANDOLPH 1744, daughter of WILLIAM RANDOLPH and MARY ISHAM. She was born Abt. 1680 in Turkey Island, Henrico County, Virginia. Notes for WILLIAM STITH: William Stith, son of the first Colonel John Stith and Jane Parsons, married Mary Randolph, eldest daughter of William Randolph of Turkey Island per Supplement to Tuckahoe and the Tuckahoe Randolphs by Jefferson Randolph Anderson, Savannah, Georgia published in Volume V, Genealogies of Virginia Families from Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, page 33. It also shows: Conflicting views have been expressed as to whether this Mary Rnadolph married William Stith or John Stith, both being sons of Captain John Stith of Charles City County who was disfranchised by the Bacon General Assembly of 1676. Some genealogists apparently suggest that he was this Captain John Stith himself but that is impossible because of certain basic facts. One of these is that this original Captain John Stith came to Virginia circa 1655 and at that time the "father" of Mary Randolph was only a small boy of five years of age in Warwickshire, England. Another of these basic facts is that the old Charles City Records show that this Captain John Stith was married in 1656 to Jane Parsons, the widow of Joseph Parsons. (See Charles City Records, Book 1, 1655 to 1665, pp. 70, 81 and 433, in Archive Division, Virginia State Library.) The Page Family Book, accepted and followed apparently without inquiry by Du Bellet (Vol. 11, p. 132) and by Colonel isham Randolph's very recent book (p. 11 and P. 249) ust published this year (actual year in the past and not known) says that this Mary Randolph married about 1712, Captain "John" Stith and that their "only" son, Reverend William Stith was the Historian and the President of William and Mary College. This is also followed by an article in the Richmond Times=Dispatch of 4 October 1908; author not given. The great weight of authority, however, seems to be conclusive that the statement in our original narrative is correct, and that Mar Randolph, daughter of William and Mary Randolph of Turkey Island, was married to "William Stith, son of the original Captain John Stith; and that both the Page Book and Du Bellet were also in error in stating that the Historian William Stith was their only son. The statement in our original narrative is based on the record shown in the Edgehill Roll of the Randolphs and many well recognized authorities. Slaughter, in the History of Bristol Parish, p. 214, says she married "William" Stith. Mr. R. A. Brock in his Notes to the Vestry Book of Henrico Parish, Note 14, p. 180, says, "The Reverand William Stith was the son of "William" Stith and Mary, the daughter of William Randolph of Turkey Island". Mr. Brock further says that his information was from a M/s. Mem. Book of John Randolph of Roanoke. The Richmond Critic of 10 September 1888, in Genealogical Letter XIII, and in Note L to Genealogical Letter XIV says that Captain John Stith was Sheriff of Charles City in 1691; Burgess in 1693 and that his second son "William" married Mary Randolph, daughter of William Randolph of Turkey Island. Judge U. J. Turnbull, a descendant of the Stith family, in a genealogical letter on that family in the Richmond Times-Dispatch of 24 April 1904, says "The Rev. William Stith, historian and president of William and Mary College was son of "William" Stith, who was oldest son of Colonel John Stith of Charles City County, 1688. His "mother" was Mary Randolph, daughter of William P. (sic) Randolph of Turkey Island. Mr. R. S. Brent, Commissioner of Revenue, Northumberland County, Virginia, in a letter to the Times-Dispatch 17 September 1905, says that the second son of Colonel John Stith, "William" Stith, married Mary, daughter of William P. (sic) Randolph of Turkey Island and was the father of Reverend William Stith. Children: 1. John Stith married Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of Reverend Charles Anderson, Rector of old Westover Church 2. William Stith, Jr. married Judith Randolph 3. Mary Stith married William Dawson The Stith Family by Armistead C. Gordon published in William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vo. 22, No. 1. (July 1913, pp. 44-51, transcribed on Rootsweb.com archives shows Captain John Stith, son of Major John Stith and Jane, widow of Joseph Parsons, married Mary Randolph and had issue: 1. Rev. William Stith, born 1707, died 19 September 1755, married Judith Randolph, his first cousin (7 Quarterly, p. 99) 2. Lieutenant Colonel John Stith (erroneously stated by Dr. Johnston to have been a son of Lieut. Col. Druty Stith)(21 Quarterly, p. 187), married Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of Reverend Charles Anderson of Estover, died circa 1758 3. Mary Randolph Stith married (first wife of) Commissary William Dawson Notes for MARY RANDOLPH: Mary Randolph is identified as the daughter of William Randolph and Mary Isham, in the last will and testament of her maternal grandmother Katherine Banks Isham dated 1686. The Daughters of Colonel William Randolph of Turkey Island and two informative wills published in Genealogies of Virginia Families from Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume 5. It goes on to say that Mary Randolph, the elder daughter of her parents, named for her mother (and wrongly stated to have been born in 1682) married Captain William Stith (frequently given as John) and had issue: Mary Randolph, seventh child and oldest daughter of William Randolph (1st) of Turkey Island (and Mary Isham) was born there about 1692 and married about 1712, Captain William Stith of Charles City County, a son of Captain John Stith, who was disfranchised by the Bacon Generl Assembly of 1676 on the charge of being one of the chief causes of all their greivances and had issue per Tuckahoe and the Tuckahoe Randolphs by Jefferson Randolph Anderson, Savannah, GA published in Genealogies of Virginia Families from The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. The will of Henry Isham, establishes the fact that Mary and Elizabeth Randolph were born before 10 October 1686 and must now be the eldest children instead of they youngest as previously thought. Children of WILLIAM STITH and MARY RANDOLPH are: 5. i. REVEREND WILLIAM3 STITH, JR., b. 1707; d. 19 September 1755. 6. ii. JOHN STITH, b. of Charles City County, Virginia; d. Abt. 1758. 7. iii. ANNE2 STITH (JOHN1) She married ROBERT BOLLING 1681, son of JOHN BOLLING and MARY UNKNOWN. He was born 26 December 1646, and died 17 July 1709 in Aged 62 years, 6 months and 21 days. Notes for ANNE STITH: Ann Stith, daughter of John Stith and Jane, widow of Joseph Parsons, married Robert Bolling as his second wife and had issue, Robert, Stith, Edward, Ann, Drury, Thomas and Agnes per The Stith Family by Armisted C. Gordon, published in William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 22, No 1 (July 1913, pp. 44-51 transcribed on Rootsweb.com archives Notes for ROBERT BOLLING: We give the descendants of this pair as given by Dr. Slaughter, with such additional comments as have appeared to us of interest. The Bollings belonged to the English family of Bollings of "Bolling Hall, Yorkshire". Robert Bolling, son of John Bolling of Bolling Hall, born 1646, came from London, England to Virginia in 1660 and married 1675, Jane, daughter of Thomas Rolfe, and grand-daughter of Pocahontas, he married second 1681, Anne Stith of Brunswick Couny, Virginia, and lived at "Kippax" in Prince George County, died 1709 Robert Bolling has an only son by his first marriage to Jane Rolfe: 1. John Bolling, born 1675, who married Mary Kennon Robert Bolling had the following children by his second married to Anne Stith 2. Robert Bolling, born 1682, married 1706, Anne Cocke 3, Stith Bolling 4, Edward Bolling 5. Anne Bolling 6. Drury Bolling 7. Thomas Bolling 8. Agnes Bolling married Richard Kennon Until a few years ago when the fragments were removed to a family burial vault in etersburg, the broken tomb of Colonel Robert Bolling, the immigrant, remained at "Kippax", Prince George County, Virginia. It bore the Bolling arms and the following epitaph: "Here lyeth interred in hope of a joyful ressurrection, the body of Robert Bolling, the son of John and Mary Bolling, of Allhallows, Barkin Parish, Tower Street, London, England. He was born the 26th of December in the year 1646, and came to Virginia, October the 2d, 1660 and departed this life the 17th day of July 1709, aged sixty-two years, six months and twenty-one days". As these dates show, Robert Bolling was only fourteen years of age when he came to the colony and was doubtless, in the care of some friend. In early manhood he engaged in trade as a merchant, and the firm of "Robert Bolling and Company" is referred to in the records of several counties, showing that their business was extensive. He was also a planter and acquired large tracs of land. His residence was in Charles City County, Virginia, on the south side of James River in what is now Prince George County, Virginia. The name of the plantation where he lived, "Kippax" did not probably originate with, as he had, so far as is known, no reson for giving the name. The first public office which he held was doubless, that of justice of Charles City County, Virginia, and he was sheriff of that county in 1692 and 1699 (Va. Mag. Hist. and Biog. I, 234). In 1702 he was still a justice. He was ember of the House of Burgesses for Charles City at the sessions of April 168, April 1692 and April 1699 and for Prince George, April 1704 (Va. Mag. Hist. and Biog. XV, 332, 438,441 and Colonia Virginia Register). In 1705 he is styled, in a land patent, "Col. Robert Bolling" which indicates that he was then Colonel of the Prince George militia. Col. Bolling probably acquired much land by purchase, as his grants March 1700-1702, from Stephen Cocke to Robert Bolling, mercant of Bristol parish, Charles City County, conveying 240 acres north of the Appomattox River, part of a plantation called Ol Town. His grants comprised about 1760 acres in Bristol Parish, 50 acres in Henrico County, and 1973 acres in Prince George on Moccasoneck Creek and Nottoway River. The last grant dated May 6, 1706 was to "Collo. Robert Bolling". His first grant was in 1682 to "Robert Bolling, Gent.". There is in the Virginia State Library as old volumes of the laws of Virginia known as "Purvise's Collection", which once belonged to Robert. A fly leaf contains an entry which gives the dates of his birth and arrival in Virginia as they appear on his tomb and continues, "& in the year 75 married Jane, the daughter of Thomas Rolfe, gent., by whom he had one son, John Bolling, born ye 26th day of January 1676. She dying (in 1676-Bolling Memoirs) he married a second venture Anne ye daughter of Major John Stith in ye year 1681, by whom he hat Robert Bolling, born Jan ye 25th 1686, ditto Stith Bolling Borne March ye 28th 1686, ditto Edward Bolling borne ye first dat of October 1687, ditto Ann Bolling borne ye 22d of July 1690, ditto Drury Bolling borne ye 21st day of June 1695, ditto Thomas Bolling borne ye 30th day of March 1697-8 and Agnes Bolling borne ye 30th Novembe 1700, and that god almighty may beless these blessings shall be the continual prayer of their father Robt Bolling". Gordon, William and Mary College Quarterly Historicl Magazine, Vol. 22, No. 1 (July 1913, pp. 44-51 shows Reverend William Stith, born 1707, died 19 September 1755, married Judith Randolph, his first cousin (7 Quarterly, p. 99) but shows his father as John Stith. This difference of opinion is discussed under his father "William" Stith who married Judith Randolph. Notes for JUDITH RANDOLPH: Judith Randolph, second child of Thomas Randolph of Tuckahoe and Judith Fleming, was born there about 1716 and married 13 July 1738, Reverend William Stith, died 1755, Minister of Henrico Parish 1736-1752, President of William and Mary College 1752 to 1755 and author of History of Virginia. Notes for JOHN STITH: John Stith of Charles City County, Virginia is shown to be the son of William Stith and Mary Randolph per Tuckahoe and the Tuckahoe Randolphs by Jefferson Randolph Anderson, Savannah, GA published in Genealogies of Virginia Families from The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography. It later adds that the second son John Stith married Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of Reverend Charles Anderson, Rector of old Westover Church and had a son, Anderson Stith and a daughter, Ann Stith. Lieutenant Colonel John Stith, erroneously stated by Dr. Johnstone to have been the son of Lieutenant Colonel Drury Stith and his wife, Susanna Bathurst, was the second son of John (corrected to William) Stith (see discussing under his father "William" Stith who married Mary Randolph, and younger brother of Reverend William Stith, President of William and Mary College. He was of Charles City County, Virginia and married Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of Reverend Charles Anderson of Westover, and his wife Frances. Southall Published in Genealogies of Virginia Families from the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume II X. DESCENDANTS OF ANNE COCKE (3) AND ROBERT BOLLING (3) In his genealogy of the Bolling Family (Bristol Parish), Dr. Slaughter gives the descendants of Robert Bolling (3) and Anne Cocke (3), who were the progenitors of a most notable line of prominent names in the history of the colony. Robert Bolling(3) was of Charles City (he was thrown into Prince George in 1702), and was surveyor of that county. (Either he or his father was sheriff in 1699) It is probable that his wife was of the same county, and was the daughter of Richard Cocke (2) the younger, who lived in Charles City at Old Mans Creek. The Charles City Records being lost, we cannot verify this conjecture. (William Lightoot (4) of Teddington (Sandy Point, Charles City), had a daughter named Anne Cocke and a daughter named May Elizabeth Bolling. See William and Mary Quarterly, October 1894, page 108. And there was a Bolling Cocke in Charles City county in the latter part of the Eighteenth Century). We give the descendants of this pair as given by Dr. Slaughter, with such additional comments as have appeared to us of interest. The Bollings belonged to the English family of Bollings of Bolling Hall, Yorkshire. Robert Bolling (2) (son of John Bolling of Bolling Hall) born 1646, came from London to Virginia in 1660, and married 1675, Jane, daughter of Thomas Rolfe, and granddaughter of Pocahontas; he marred second, 1681, Anne Stith of Brunswick county, and lived at Kippax in Prince George county. Died 1709. Issue by first marriage: 1. John Bolling (3), born 1675. He became a prominent citizen of Henrico and represented that county in the House of Burgesses in 1714, 1723 and 1726. He became, says Dr. Slaughter, immensely rich, and was buried at Cobbs, April 20th, 1729. Issue by second marriage 2. Robert Bolling (3), born 1682, married 1706, Anne Cocke, died 1749 3. Stith Bolling (3) 4. Edward Bolling (3) 5. Anne Bolling (3) 6. Drury Bolling (3) 7. Thomas Bolling (3) 8. Agnes Bolling Issue of Robert Bolling (3) and Anne Cocke (3): 1. This marriage must cause genealogy problems, because Mary was apparently named after her mother and married a cousin with the same name as her father. Mary Burton Bolling, died 1787, was first wife of Robert Bolling of Centre Hill and daughter of Colonel Robert Bolling of Challowe in Section X. Descendants of Anne Cocke and Robert Bolling portion of Genealogy of the Cocke Family in Virginia prepared by James C. Southall published in Genealogies of Virginia Families from The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, However, further on they show that Mary Burton Augusta Bolling was born 1789 which is "after" the date shown for her mother's death so one of the dates is incorrect. Robert Bolling is shown to have married his second wife in 1790 so the death date was changed to before 1790. Notes for SALLY WASHINGTON: Sally Washington, daughter of Lawrence Washington, died 1796 is shown to be the third spouse of Robert Bolling of Centre Hill. She apparently died the same year that she married and had no children, From Section X. Descendants of Anne Cocke and Robert Bolling portion of Genealogy of the Cocke Family in Virginia prepared by James C. Southall published in Genealogies of Virginia Families from The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, A footnote shows that her father Lawrence Washington must have been a nephew or more probably a cousin of General George Washington. ii.
