Patrick Hepburn is our earliest identified Hepburn surname ancestor. His origins and life are our "genealogical brick wall" ... a point beyond which research has not succeeded. Whether he was a physician, surgeon, or apothecary, all of whom were styled Doctor in his era, is unknown.

His children Margaret and John are documented bu their mother, if the same, has not been identified.

Patrick must have arrived in Maryland before the birth of Margaret, variously given as 1694 and 1700 or 1702. The 1694 date puts a span of fifteen years between his children, suggesting more than one wife given the era when women frequently dies in childbirth.

He married Elizabeth Parker in 1711 when son John was a baby. The marriage required special dispensation because Elizabeth was a very recent widow.

In early 18th century Maryland, six decades before the American Revolution, Patrick was a person of station and means; a land owner and a "Gentleman" in his time. He was prominent in local affairs as was his son John, grandson Samuel, and the various in-laws by marriage who formed part of the landed gentry of Maryland.

What we have is a collection of references from various sources, none of which answer the questions about his parentage. I herewith present what finding I have.

Thomas Doolittle 1630-1707
Was an important and influential minster, author, and educator in the Reformed Presbyterian Church. He schooled many famous Christian leaders including Matthew Henry of Bible Commentary fame. Patrick's grandson John Muir Hepburn was married in a Presbyterian Church in Baltimore in 1818 and the Presbyterian Church was the dominant, even established, church of Scotland following the Reformation. It is reasonable to think, barring information to the contrary, that Dr Patrick was a Presbyterian.
