Funderburg, Jacob 36 1864 Ohio head Hotel Keeper
Funderburg, Rachel 27 1872 Ohio wife [ Rachel Levitt ]
Funderburg, Robert 5 1895 Ohio son
In 1900 Jacob Funderburg, age 36, was living with wife Rachel and son Robert in Somerset,
Perry County, Ohio. He was proprietor of the American Hotel in Somerset.
Before June 1909 when daughter Flora Belle was born, he moved his family from Somerset to
Newark, Licking County, Ohio twenty miles away and became a motorman on the electric railway [streetcars].
He changed the spelling of his name from Funderburg to Fundaberg.
He continued his employment as a motorman at least through April 1930 when the last available
US Census was enumerated. He was sixty-four years of age at that census.
The following year, 1931, he lost both his wife Rachel and his son Robert to death from an
auto accident. In 1938 he moved to Detroit to live with his daughter Florabelle and her husband
Bernard O'Neill. He died there is 1940.
This author has yet to discover what may have precipitated the move and change of occupation from
what seemingly was a significant business career to a mundane occupation.
Noah, the first Funderburg to migrate from Maryland yo Ohio, settled in Perry County right
at the time Ohio was admitted to the Union.

The proprietor of the American Hotel, Mr. Jacob Fundaberg, is not only widely known, but enjoys
a poularity commensurate with his far-reaching acquaintance. Not a few traveling men who come to
Somerset regularly make it a point to Sunday, or prolong their stay here, largely, if not solely,
on account of the courteous and hospiytable entertainment they receive at the hands of the genial
Mr. Fundaberg.
During the several years he has conducted this hotel he has continually
widened its scope of patronage, which is a fitting testimony to meritorious effots.
As a citizen Mr. fundaberg enjoys the confidence and esteem of all who know him. He is the only Republican
that has been elected to the Somerset mayoralty in the past twelve years.
He is a modest gentleman, ever willing to concede to another the privilege of his own views. This
trait of character fits him admirably for the entertainment of the classes and the masses.
