According to "Funderburk History and Heritage" by Guy B. Funderburk, Ph.D.
Salem College, Salem, WV and Burkley Hills Farm, SC [extracted from a genealogy report furnished
by Yvonne Simmons Sickles, decendant of Walter]:
Walter Funderburgh was born in Kassel, Hessen, Germany about 1715.
He came to America in 1738, settled in Lancaster Co, PA; was baptized into the
German Baptist Church of the Brethren at Conestoga, PA in 1742;
married Catherina Stoll of Brandenburg, Germany in 1743.
In 1750 he moved to Frederick Co, MD where in 1760 he filed a land patent.
In 1778 Oct 16 his will was probated naming his wife Catherina and ten children.
The small red square on the adjacent map from Wikipedia.org shows the location of Hesse.
A portion of the article thereon states: "The Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel
(German: Landgrafschaft Hessen-Kassel) or Hesse-Cassel was a Reichsfrei principality of the
Holy Roman Empire that came into existence when the Landgraviate of Hesse was divided in 1567
upon the death of Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse. His eldest son William IV inherited the northern
half and the capital of Kassel. The other sons received the Landgraviate of Hesse-Marburg, the
Landgraviate of Hesse-Rheinfels and the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt.
The Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel was elevated to the Electorate of Hesse (Kurfürstentum Hessen,
or Kurhessen) in 1803. It was then annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866 after the
Austro-Prussian War and subsequently became the Province of Hesse-Nassau.
Walter and family finally settled on land near the Susquehana River in Frederick County, newly
formed from the original Baltimore County, in a place coincident with modern Hagerstown in what
is now Washington County in the State of Maryland. Also in 1760, the three eastern counties became
the new colony of Delaware.

Author notes: A footnote to the file in my posession is an extract
from "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" vol 1 pp 221-3, by Strassburger & Hinke, published by
Pennsylvania German Society, Norristown, PA.
" Walter came to America on 19 September 1738 and landed in Philadelphia on the ship 'The Thistle'.
The commander of this ship was John Wilson, and the ship came from Rotterdam, but stopped on the way in
Plymouth, England. He also came with someone named Peter von der Burg. They qualified on
19 September 1738. They both made an x, so could not yet write English. Although their names are
not of their writing, they can be found on page 230 of Volume II. The series ends in 1808. "
[End quote]
Though apparently not obvious to the writers of the above, anyone who can write in their native
language can write their name. 'von der Burg' is the same in German as it is in English,
so language has nothing to do with it. They simply could not write their names.
