The Lafayette (Louisiana) Daily Advertiser published May 18, 1895, reported that "Dr. J. A. Villien of Mauriceville was in Lafayette on business last Wednesday."

One of many small town items on that page that day. It isn't significant news but it speaks to his standing in the community that the city newspaper would take note of his one day visit.

Postings to the Vermillion Parish pages of LAGenWeb found 2007 09 10 include the following references:

Quoting 'Southwest Louisiana Biographical & Historical by William Henry Perrin; published 1891 pages 252.', Margaret Rentrop Moore has claimed acopyright notice to her use of someone else's work, absurd on the face of it, but nevertheless here is an extract from the page discussing the Doctors and Lawyers in Vermillion Parish at the time the book was written and published in 1891. The book lists members of the VERMILLION MEDICAL SOCIETY and includes Joseph A. Villien. The original author states, "The Vermilion Medical Society was organized in 1887 and holds quarterly meetings. To become members of the society, physicians must be regularly graduated from a regular medical college, and in good standing."

The same Margaret Moore, quoting the same book by Perrin, cites this entry under Benevolent Associations, etc, " Branch No. 597, St. Mary Magdelane Lodge of the Catholic Knights of Honor was chartered here November 30, 1889. It was organized February 10, 1890. Charter members were: Lastie Broussard, O. Bourque, Lewis Laporte, T. S. Abshire, M. D., John Abshire, Jr., Adonis LeBlanc, Felix Broussard and A. J. Golden. This lodge is in a prosperous condition and constantly receiving new members. Its competent and attentive corps of officers are: President, O. Bourque; Vice President, Lastie Broussard; Secretary, Adonis LeBlanc; Medical Examiner, J. T. Abshire, M. D.; Financial Secretary, J. A. Villien. This lodge is constantly receiving accessions of new members and bids fair to become the strongest in the parish in the near future."
