Author note: The census search results were returned on the basis of surname = VILLIEN. In fact, there are members of our family in each census from 1860 thru 1930. The surname has been variously indexed as Villien, Villein, Zillien, Villiers, and probably some other incorrect variants which have not occurred to me. A great deal of careful searching under criteria of first name variants and place names produced a fairly accurate listing of Villiens in Vermillion Parish, Louisiana from the arrival of Jean Maurice thru 1930 after which census records are presently sealed. It is mysterious that no amount of effort and no strategy turned up the Villiens, known to be living, in the 1930 census.

WWI Draft Registration Cards

Three members of the Villien family in Vermillion Parish, Louisiana registered for the military draft during World War I. Joseph's two eldest sons Jacques [James] and Albert, along with Joseph's brother Jean [John].

It's interesting to note the registration dates - all on September 12, 1918. On that day, Jean and his nephews must have saddled up or used a carriage or buckboard to traipse over to Abbeville and register together. Maybe they had an automobile or truck, which few did in 1918.

The armistice was declared November 11, 1918 so they were spared the incredible hardships of a troop ship to Europe and then the horrors of trench fighting the Kaiser's army.

[From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Armistice Day is the anniversary of the official end of World War I, November 11, 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." ]

At that time, it was part of New France with New Orleans as its capital.

[2] Could be 'our' Lastie Villien, at age 20. Though not confirmed by anyone, I was told in my youth that 'Uncle Doc' had been a merchant seaman before settling down and going to college and medical school.
