Joseph Ignace Richard was deported, or expelled, from Acadia [Canada] with his parents to first
England, then France where they settled at Belle-Ile-en-Mer. His son Basile MArie Richard was born
there in 1767.
At age 18, he responded to Spain's recruitment campaign for settlers to Louisiana where there was an
established Acadian population. He must have at first settled in the German Coast area because he met
and married Marie Anne Comeau at Donaldsonville, Louisiana. She was born in Cherbourg, France but there
is presently no discovered passenger record for her arrival in Louisiana. Many Comeaus did emigrate
but her name is not among them. At the time of their marriage she was 19 and he 21.
By 1810, after 22 years of marriage, they were established in Lafourche Parish with their 11 children.
Marie died in 1824, age 55, in Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. Four years later Basile
married Henriette Bourgeois. He was then age 61; she was 33. He sired two more children.
Henriette was only 42 when she died in 183 leaving 70 year old twice widowed Basile with two children;
a seven year old son and a five year old daughter.
After one year and one week of mourning, Basile married for a third time; Marie Pontiff.
Marie was 53 when they married so it is not surprising no children proceeded from this union.
He lived seven more years finally giving it up at the advanced age, for the times, of 78.
