All records pertaining to Michel Sansoucy Richard are from family trees by other
researchers. To date have not found any historical records outside of family trees at Rootsweb.com,
Ancestry.com, and the extensive ancestry chart by Wallace Dunlap.
In many of these trees, Michel's father's name is given as simply Andre without the Jean in front.
In some of these trees, Guillaume is given as his father rather than grandfather. Absurdly, one
tree has Jean Andre b.1600 as father of Guillaume b.1580. I wonder what that person was thinking
when entering such impossible data. The preponderance of sources agree with what is offered here.
In any case, Michel & Madeleine appear to be the progenitors of our Richard family in the New World.]

Apparently named for his mother [Michel is the masculine and Michelle the feminine in French],
Michel made the journey from France to L'Acadie, New France, now Canada. If he had brothers
or sisters, they have not been named in any documents or sources which have come to my attention.
This entry in the 1671 Acadian Census exactly matches our Michel:

Sources agree Michel Sansoucy Richard was born in the province of Saintonge, France, in 1630. His father
Jean Andre is also generally regarded as having been born in Saintonge but some sources say Martaize. The
map at right shows Saintonge in red and Martaize in green. They are practically one on top another and both
are in the region of Poitou-Charentes. Map above shows where he went; Port Royale, Nova Scotia in L'Acadie
which now is Canada but then was in New France.
Numerous other of our French ancestors came from the adjacent area to the north along the Atlantic coast of France.

Saintonge is a small region on the Atlantic coast of France within the administrative region of
Poitou-Charentes and the Department 17, Charente-Maritime. It derives its name from the ancient
Celtic tribe of the Santones who lived in this area, around the current city of Saintes;
they were known as the Saintongese.
The Saintonge was the center of the French Huguenots. Today, the region is famous for its production
of the grapes that are used to produce cognac and Pineau des Charentes. It was the birthplace of the
explorer Jean Allefonsce.
This area is also famous for its widely exported medieval pottery which frequently turns up on
archaeological excavations. The vessels that these shards derive from were made and exported as a
by-product of the Bordeaux wine trade (Deroeux and Dufournier, 1991), and are found in large
quantities on medieval excavations throughout Ireland and other European countries.
When located the shards consist of an off white, micaceous fabric with moderate amounts of quartz
and sparse inclusions of haematite. They are glazed on the external surface only with a clear lead
glaze to which, the addition of copper filings produces a mottled mid green colouring.
Many forms of saintonge were produced including Saintonge polychrome, all over green and in some cases,
unglazed wares. The most common forms of vessel produced in this ware were wine jugs. These were,
characteristically, tall, with slightly ovoid bodies, flat bases, parrot beak spouts and strap handles.
This ware has been found on Irish excavations from the later 12th century but it is most commonly
uncovered in 13th century contexts.

present département of Charente-Maritime. Its chief city was Saintes. Saintonge was originally the
territory inhabited by the Santones, a Gallic tribe. Through the Middle Ages, Saintonge shared the
political fortunes of neighbouring Guyenne and Poitou. It was definitively incorporated into France in 1375.

The child, Jean Joseph 'dit Richard' Boutin, is listed as born in France. If so, Michel
either journeyed to France and fathered a child by a woman named Boutin, or she was in
Canada, became impregnated, and returned to France to deliver her child. It is illogical
that the child would have issued from Michel and MAdeleine during a trip to France because
of the name "Boutin". The facts could be entirely different from what I've said here.

United his destiny with a girl of twelve years, Madeleine Blanchard, ca.1658 at Port Royale, who gave
him twelve children before dying in 1685.
Michel Richard was seemingly from Saintonge, in the west-central part of France. He arrived in Acadia in 1654, just before the attack and capture of Port-Royal by the Col. Robert Sedgwick, commander-in-chief of the Anglo-American armies of the coast of New England.
Upon his arrival at Port-Royal, Michel was obliged, like others, to take up arms to defend the colony. Following this attack, Acadia remained under Massachusetts English control for a period of sixteen years.
It took more than the English attack and the Boston occupation to discourage these landclearers of the primitive Acadia. Shortly after his arrival, Michel Richard was granted two concessions of land which he set immediately to clearing. It is at this time that his heart bounced for this young girl
of twelve years, Madeleine Blanchard, daughter of Jean Blanchard and Radegaonde Lambert..
Certainly, she was young, but ready to bear child because, less than one year after the marriage, a first infant was born. In this era because of the rude climate and the necessity of assuring the survival each day, the people married early…However, the longevity was very short. A man was already old at forty. He lived rarely more than fifty years.
Jean Blanchard was born in France, in the region of Loudun, from whence he came, with his parents, ca.1636, to settle at Port-Royal. By marrying the daughter of Jean Blanchard, Michel Richard allied himself with one of the most oldest families of Acadia.
England gave Acadia back to France, in 1670. The peace reigned again, for awhile. Despite the English occupation, Michel had been able to clear fourteen arpents of land. He possessed about fifteen horned animals, and fourteen sheep. This was not called « rich », for sure, but he was already
living at ease. His family totaled already seven children : René, Pierre, Catherine, Martin, Alexandre and two twins, Anne and Madeleine. Their ages were between five weeks and fourteen years. The oldest, René, who will take the name of Beaupré, married ca. 1680, Madeleine Landry, daughter of René
and Marie Salé (her again ?). Seven years later, Pierre chose for a companion Marguerite Landry, Madeleine`s sister. The two brothers settled in the fertile region of Bassin-des-Mines.
The first of the forefather Michel Richard`s daughters to marry was Catherine who, in 1678, married François Brossard. The third son, Martin Richard, united his destiny to Marguerite Bourg, daughter of François and Marguerite Boudrot. He became on of the first colonists of Beaubassin, which had just been founded by Jacques Bourgeois and a few of his friends.
Another son of the ancestor, Alexandre, founded a family around 1686, by marrying Élizabeth Petitpas, daughter of Claude, clerk of Port-Royal, and Catherine Bugard. As for the twins, they took in marriage in 1685. Anne Richard married Germain Thériot, whole Madeleine married Charles Babin.
Becoming widowed, in 1683, Michel Richard, son* of the ancestor, married a second time, Jeanne Babin, fifteen years old, daughter of Antoine and Marie Mercier. So, Jeanne Babin was the sister of Charles Babin, the husband of his daughter Madeleine. Which made Michel Richard the brother-in-law of his own daughter.
