Author notes: There was more than one person named Pierre Chauvin. The most famous historic Piere was one who established a trading post in New France [Canada] in 1599. He died in 1606. Not our Pierre.

Pierre's Origin & Migration

Pierre Chauvin [dit LeGrand] was born in the village/town of Angers, frequently expressed as d'Angers meaning 'of Angers', sometimes corrupted to Dangers. A French speaker would say the name as Onh-jair. Angers was in the Province of Anjou, a former duchy in what are now the western Loire Counties of coastal France, shown by the orange outline on map at right.

Anjou, outlined in yellow on the adjacent map, is approximately the same area as Maine et Loire is today. Pierre's father René is also identified as being born in Anjou. The castle is Chateau D'Angers.

According to historical data, Pierre emigrated to New France being one of the Pioneers from Sarthe to Montreal in Quebec. He took passage in 1653. Author's opinion is he sailed from Nantes, the most likely nearby port, frequently used for centuries, and up the St Lawrence River.

Angers & Anjou History

The first sign of human presence on the site of Angers is a stone tool dated back to 400,000 BC (Lower Paleolithic). The earliest known inhabitants were the Andecavi, a Gallic tribe that was overrun by the Romans. The city, while under Roman rule, was called Juliomagus.

The Council of Angers was held here in 453.

The city suffered severely from the invasions of the Normans (in 845 and succeeding years)

Angers was once the capital of the historic province of Anjou. Beginning in the ninth century, the region was controlled by a powerful family of feudal lords. It is the cradle of the House of Plantagenet who ruled England from the twelfth century and gave name to the Angevin Kings of England. During this time the Hospital of Saint-Jean was built in Angers by King Henry II of England. The edifice still stands to this day, now housing an important museum. In 1204 Angers was conquered by King Philippe II.

The Huguenots took it in 1585, and the Vendean royalists were defeated nearby in 1793. Till the French Revolution Angers was the seat of a celebrated university founded in the 14th century.

Anjou

Modern département of Maine-et-Loire, which largely corresponds to AnjouAnjou is a former county (c.880), duchy (1360) and province centred on the city of Angers in the lower Loire Valley of western France. It corresponds largely to the present-day département of Maine-et-Loire.

There are in-depth articles concerning both Angers and Anjou at Wikipedia.org

http://members.aol.com/ImaBR/chauvin.htm PIERRE CHAUVIN was born in 1631 in the village of Leon d’ Angers in the province of Anjou, son of RENEE CHAUVIN and CATHERINE AVARD. Pierre was called "GRAND PIERRE", and was a miller by trade. On the 4th day of April, 1653 he signed a contract for five years to go to New France(Canada) as a miller and clearer of land. Montreal was only eleven years old and still very much a wilderness and there were only fifty settlers there when Pierre along with 152 other recruits arrived. There were two other Pierre Chauvins in that part of Canada that a researcher may get confused with "GRAND PIERRE", However, Elizabeth Shown Mills in her book "CHAUVIN DIT CHARLEVILLE" has done an exellent job in seperating and documenting our "GRAND PIERRE", Mrs. Mills also did an exellent job in pointing out the mistakes in "Old La. Families" by Stanley Arthur. PIERRE CHAUVIN was granted a land grant in 1654 at Montreal(also called Ville Marie Isle) one year after his arrival. On the 16th of September, 1658 he married fourteen year old MARTHE Le h’ AUTREUX in Montreal, daughter of RENEE le h’ AUTREUX and FRANCOISE le CHAUNERLLIAR of the Parish of Noyen province of Anjou. PIERRE died 4 August 1699 and is buried in the parish cemetery at Montreal. Compiled By: Gladys Stovall Armstrong
