1920
US Census 1920 - New Orleans & Vermillion Parish, Louisiana In New Orleans at 1220 St Mary Street the situation is confusing when viewing it from 2006. Hercules Chauvin and wife Annette are listed with their children Irene and Marietta. Also with them is his father Alcide now age 66. At the same address, but perhaps upstairs or otherwise separated, is the family of Volney Knobloch listed with dau Melanie, son Volney J. dau Eunice, and two Chauvins ... Cecelia as mother-in-law, and Hercules' sister Cecelia Chauvin sister-in-law. I deduce that Volney must have married the other sister Leah Chauvin who may have died before 1920. Volney's ancestry is undiscovered except to say that in 1900, at age 11, he was living with his aunt Lea Olivia [Knobloch] Ragan and her husband William. and Hercules, Leah and Cecelia were children of Alcide and Cecelia [Toups] Chauvin. Why Alcide is living with son Hercules and Cecelia with son-in-law Volney is not apparent. Both Hercules & Volney are listed as heads of families. Cecelia died the next year in 1921. Perhaps she was ill and her dau Cecelia was caring for her and bro-in-law Volney's family. The daughter appears to have been a spinster. --- Meanwhile, in Vermillion Parish, we find Hercules's grandfather Alcide, age 85, living as a boarder with numerous other elderly men at the Palm Hotel. Possibly a private facility for the aged.
1930
US Census 1920 - New Orleans, Louisiana Hercules & family are much as they were ten years ago but have moved to 4001 Dumaine Street around the corner from the Hepburns. Father Alcide is still with them but will die 8 years hence. Marietta will marry Howard Hepburn 5 years hence. A later search found Hercules' sister Cecelia on the next page of this census. She was still living with her brother's family.
